Title: Research on the Academic Landscape and Knowledge Network of Chinese Opera Translation and Dissemination in Japan—A Bibliometric Visualization Analysis Based on CiteSpace

Abstract: Under the backdrop of global civilizational exchange and the deepening “Going Global” strategy of Chinese culture, the study of cross-cultural communication of Chinese theater holds both theoretical and practical significance. This research analyzes 419 articles from the CNKI core journal database (2000–2024) using CiteSpace visualization tools to conduct bibliometric and knowledge mapping analyses, systematically examining the academic evolutionary trajectory and knowledge production characteristics in this field. Findings reveal that annual publication volume and the proportion of funded research have grown in tandem. The research paradigm has undergone three phases of transformation: from script translation strategies to cultural dissemination mechanisms, and further to interdisciplinary integration, synthesizing multidimensional perspectives from theater studies, communication studies, and international relations. The academic community, centered around scholars such as Li Liwei and Zou Yuanjiang, has formed a “core-periphery” collaborative network through institutions like Wuhan University and South China Normal University, though opportunities remain for broader cross-regional cooperation. Research hotspots focus on five dimensions: dialogue between Noh and Peking Opera from a Sino-Japanese comparative perspective, semiotic interpretations of Mei Lanfang’s performances in Japan, textual studies on the dissemination of Chinese opera during Japan’s Edo period, decoding Chinese elements in Kabuki, and dissemination innovations through short-form videos in the digital era. These themes reflect the academic community’s dual emphasis on historical experiences and contemporary practices. By combining quantitative and qualitative analyses, this study elucidates the deeper challenges of modernizing traditional resources and theorizing local experiences in China’s cultural diplomacy, offering methodological insights for constructing a cross-cultural communication theory of Chinese opera with distinctive national characteristics.
