Title: Between National Culture and Global Epic:The Teahouse in Germany

Abstract: As the first international tour of Chinese modern drama, the tour of The Teahouse in Germany was a great success; the reasons for this deserve to be explored in depth and comprehensively. The multi-layered promotion by key individuals, professional theatre companies, state institutions, as well as the work’s conformity with the dominant poetics in Germany, created a favourable environment for the dissemination of The Teahouse. The fusion of national characteristics and human commonalities in the script and performance was the intrinsic factor in the play’s full recognition in Germany. The performance and reinterpretation by the simultaneous interpreter eliminated the language gap and fostered the audience’s cross-cultural understanding of the play. These experiences of The Teahouse can provide a useful reference for the international dissemination of Chinese literature and art.
