Title: The Dissemination of Modern Novel: Affective Narratives and the Negotiation of Public and Private SpheresA Review of Jin Wen’s Age of Feeling: Enlightenment Thoughts and the Rise of the Modern Novel in the 18th Century

Abstract: The rise of Enlightenment rationality and the modern novel is a classic theme in the study of 18th century Western literature and culture, both domestically and internationally. The former has become almost an indisputable theory, while the latter, due to an overwhelming amount of related research, has made it difficult to find new perspectives, deterring further exploration. In 2024, Age of Feeling: Enlightenment Thoughts and the Rise of the Modern Novel in 18th Century boldly raised the banner of “sentiment”, adding a uniquely insightful work to the in-depth exploration of these fields. Age of Feeling responds to the rise of the novel by addressing 18th century issues of sentiment from the perspective of media dissemination. The contribution of this work lies in the fact that scholar Jin Wen has carved out a new path of “affective narrative” from the complex paradigms of modern novel studies. While reconstructing the theoretical framework within Enlightenment thoughts, the work emphasizes how the dissemination of novels connected the private and public spheres of the time and intervened in reality through negotiations with various historical discourses. The publication of Age of Feeling not only fills the gap in the systematic study of literary sentiment in domestic academia but also provides a fresh media perspective for entering the literary field of the 18th century.
