Title: The Ontological Construction of Chan under the Theory of the Unconscious: A Review of Mingdong Gu’s The Nature and Rationale of Zen/Chan and Enlightenment
Abstract: Mingdong Gu’s The Nature and Rationale of Zen/Chan and Enlightenment presents a unique theory of the unconscious rooted in Chinese wisdom. First, it challenges the phallocentric perspective in psychoanalysis, which is based on childhood experiences, and instead interprets the principles and practical effects of Chan through the concept of the “prenatal mind”, a perspective may be referred to as “womb-centrism”. Second, it views the “cosmic unconscious” attained through Chan practice as a return to a prenatal unconscious state by suspending linguistic functions, this points toward a new “cosmo-uterine theory”, in which a Chan practitioner may once again gestate body and mind within the cosmic environment, thereby attaining a state of sagehood. Third, drawing from Zhuangzi’s concept of “fasting of the mind” and Huineng’s notion of “mindlessness”, the book argues for the indigenous origins of Chan teachings and their unconscious theory, emphasizing Chan as a universal personal religion that transcends nationality, era, and belief systems. Such a “fetal unconsciousness” attained through Chan practice may suggest the possibility of being born again after birth—of escaping the dead net of language and entering the world anew.
Keywords: Chan; the unconscious; “prenatal mind”; “fasting of the mind”; “mindlessness”
