Title: The Acceptance of Jia Dao by Ancient Korean Literati from a Cross-cultural Perspective: Centered on the Joseon Dynasty
Abstract: The countries on the ancient Korean Peninsula had a profound historical connection with ancient China. The acceptance of Jia Dao, a poet of the Tang Dynasty in China, by ancient Korean literati began in the Silla period and continued uninterrupted through to the Joseon Dynasty, reaching its peak during the Joseon Dynasty. In the minds of Korean literati, Jia Dao was perceived as emboding four typical images: a poet-monk who returned to secular life from Buddhism, a poor and distressed poet, a poet of extraordinary literary talent, and a poet who painstakingly deliberated over his verses while riding a donkey. What’s more, the literati of the Joseon Dynasty held different attitudes towards Jia Dao’s painstaking poetic deliberation. Some literati learned from Jia Dao’s poetry through composing poems in the same rhyme scheme, using the same rhymes, compiling sentences from his works, and adapting his expressions. However, the literati in the Joseon Dynasty who were deeply influenced by Confucianism, criticized Jia Dao’s method of painstakingly pondering over and refining his verses, and disapproved of his remote and bitter poetic style.
