Title: The Modern English Translation of Su Shi’s Poetry and Prose: Documents, Periodization, and Significance

Abstract: During the simultaneous process of “Chinese Learning Spreading Westward” alongside the “Western Learning Spreading Eastward,” the English translation of Su Shi’s poetry and prose holds unique cultural and historical significance. However, due to the scarcity of primary sources, early studies contain numerous inaccuracies. Relevant documents are mainly scattered across the writings of Western missionaries, diplomats, and contemporary English-language journals. A thorough reinvestigation and analysis of these materials can help correct existing misinterpretations, clarify the trajectory of Su Shi’s works in the Western world, and lay the foundation for a refined periodization of their translation history. The periodization of Su Shi’s English translations not only respects key events in translation history but also offers new perspectives for the study of his cross-cultural transmission. As a literary giant of China, Su Shi’s translation journey reflects how Western audiences have received and understood Chinese culture while highlighting the complexities of Sino-Western cultural exchanges.
