Tittle: A Study of Compositional Techniques in Nils Asheim’s Yangqin Concerto Close at Distance

Abstract: This paper takes the yangqin concerto Close at Distance, composed by Norwegian composer Nils Asheim for the “Foreign Composers Write China” project, as its research subject, analyzing it from three dimensions: the localized application of “controlled aleatorism” techniques, the soundscape construction between the yangqin and orchestra, and the gene-based transformation of traditional Chinese musical elements. It reveals the dynamic balance and synergistic effects among these three dimensions, providing a micro-analytical model for understanding the “Foreign Composers Write China” project, as well as valuable insights for contemporary Chinese musical composition on how to draw from Western modern compositional techniques and transform indigenous resources.

Keywords: Nils Asheim; Close at Distance; controlled aleatorism technology; soundscape; traditional Chinese music
