Title: The International Dissemination of China’s Maritime Image in Global History: A Review of Maritime Exchanges between Goryeo and China (918-1392)

Abstract: Maritime Exchanges between Goryeo and China (918-1392) conducts a systematic examination of seaborne interactions between the Goryeo Dynasty and successive Chinese regimes-including the Song, Liao, Jin, Yuan, and early Ming-spanning diplomatic, commercial, religious, and institutional dimensions. It presents a polycentric and multilayered picture of maritime engagement in East Asia. Anchoring the narrative in Goryeo’s perspective, the author employs multilingual sources and institutional analysis to elucidate the adaptive mechanisms and cultural strategies employed by Goryeo within maritime networks. For Chinese readers, this decentered methodological approach facilitates a breakthrough beyond traditional historiography’s single perspective, enabling a re-examination of China’s multifaceted role within regional structures. Framed within global history, this review analyzes the monograph’s argumentative logic and methodological innovations, highlighting its scholarly contributions in three areas: advancing critical studies of the tributary system, foregrounding non-state actors, and demonstrating dynamic regional civilizational interactions. By integrating comparative historiography with cross-cultural narrative methods, the work offers theoretical reference points for diversifying paradigms in Chinese maritime history research.
