(Liao Linda

Title: Port, Performing, Cultural Ties: Canton, An Important City for the Dissemination of Traditional Chinese Theatre in the West

Abstract: Canton was the first place of Westerners’ contacting of Chinese theatre. After the mid-Ming Dynasty, more and more people from the Western countries came to Canton through the maritime silk road. Many Westerners were exposed to Chinese theatre in this city. The earliest places where Westerners seen Chinese theatre were mainly concentrated in Macau, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, which also became the sites of translation and research. The process of Westerners seeing, translating, and researching Chinese theater in Canton is divided into three stages: First, a small number of early explorers and missionaries seen Chinese Theatre in Canton. Second, Canton became the only place in China for Westerners to see Chinese theatre after it became the only port of trade. Third, Canton remained the main location for Westerners to see Chinese Theatre after the Opium War. Studying the process helps to understand the collision between Chinese theatre and Western culture, to observe the process of East-West cultural fusion, and to provide a case study for the dissemination of Chinese theatre today.
