Title: The Reinvigoration Through Integration: A Review of Comparative Literature and Area Studies: Crises, Challenges, and Integration

Abstract: Since the 1900s the discipline of Comparative Literature has undergone numerous challenges. Today, technological advancements, shifts in the political economy, and the expansion of literary media have placed Comparative Literature in a complex new landscape. Against this backdrop, continuous reflections and critiques regarding research paradigms, disciplinary positioning, and power structures have precipitated a sense of crisis within the field. However, this crisis has also served as a catalyst for the discipline’s evolution. The recently published book, Comparative Literature and Area Studies: Crises, Challenges, and IntegrationChongqing University Press, 2014, focuses on this predicament. Drawing on Gayatri Spivak’s postcolonial theory, it explores strategies to address the crisis in Comparative Literature and promote its integration with Area Studies, thereby offering new perspectives and possibilities for envisioning the future of “New Comparative Literature.”

Keywords: Comparative Literature crisis; Area Studies; Gayatri Spivak; disciplinary transformation
