伊拉·纳代尔《菲利普·罗斯：追忆马塞尔·普鲁斯特》评介

摘要：菲利普·罗斯曾宣称“塞利纳是我的普鲁斯特”，被认为是与普鲁斯特保持距离的宣言,伊拉·纳代尔的《菲利普·罗斯：追忆马塞尔·普鲁斯特》试图颠覆这一成见。该书通过考察罗斯藏书中的批注、小说中对普鲁斯特的直接提及以及两位作家传记材料的比对，论证普鲁斯特是罗斯创作中不可或缺的隐秘存在。两位作家在美学目标、童年经验、历史意识和犹太身份等层面呈现出丰富的共鸣，但在喜剧传统、种族灭绝历史和记忆诗学等方面存在根本性差异。围绕这些共鸣与差异，纳代尔的论证究竟证明了“影响”还是“亲和”，仍是一个值得追问的方法论问题。

Title: Two Faces of Memory: A Review of Ira Nadel’s Philip Roth: À la recherche de Marcel Proust
Abstract: Philip Roth once declared that “My Proust is Céline,” a remark long regarded as a statement of distance from Proust. Ira Nadel’s Philip Roth: À la recherche de Marcel Proust seeks to overturn this assumption. Through an examination of annotations in Roth’s personal library, direct references to Proust in Roth’s fiction, and a comparison of biographical materials, Nadel argues that Proust was an indispensable yet concealed presence in Roth’s work. The two writers share rich affinities in their aesthetic aims, childhood experiences, historical consciousness, and engagement with Jewish identity, yet diverge fundamentally in their comic traditions, the historical reality of genocide, and their poetics of memory. Whether the resonances and differences Nadel identifies ultimately demonstrate “influence” or “affinity” remains a methodological question worth pursuing.
